Online Safety

Online anti-Muslim hate, especially on social media can be harmful, draining, and sometimes dangerous. Here are some practical steps you can take to stay safe:

  1. Protect Your Accounts
    • Use strong, unique passwords for all accounts.
    • Turn on two-factor authentication wherever possible.
    • Keep software, apps, and browsers regularly updated.

  2. Manage Your Privacy
    • Adjust privacy settings so only trusted people can see your posts.
    • Choose to limit comments on posts to "friends" or to 'no one to prevent unwanted interactions.
    • Control who can message you.
    • Remove / block abusive followers.
    • Limit how much personal information (location, workplace, family details) you share publicly.
    • Use a separate email for social media to reduce risk of doxxing.
    • Turn off location services on your device.
    • Turn off Bluetooth when you're not using it.
    • If you have a public profile and have a company registered at Companies House, ensure your home address is not visible. If you have changed address but the previous address is still visible on Companies House, you ask them to to remove it - you will need to explain the reasons for doing so.

  3. How to Respond to Online Hate
    • Don't engage with trolls - they often thrive on reaction.
    • Use mute, block, and report tools to limit exposure.
    • Keep screenshots of abuse if you need to report it (to platforms, employers, schools, or even police if threats are serious).
