FAQs

Muslim Safety Net is a project of Muslim Women’s Network UK (MWNUK), a registered charity in England and Wales (Charity No. 1155092). While MWNUK became a registered charity in 2013, the organisation has been active for over 20 years.

For more information, visit www.mwnuk.co.uk. Charity accounts can be accessed via the Charity Commission website.

The operations of Muslim Safety Net are currently not funded and we are operating the service through volunteers. However, we are grateful the funders of Muslim Women’s Network UK who have helped to get this initiative off the ground such as Esmee Fairbairn Foundation (for the website development), Coutts Bank Foundation (for database development), Pears Foundation (for staff time to gather content for the website) and JC Decaux Community Channel (for providing space on their outdoor digital screens to promote the new service).

All data collected is securely stored on servers by Muslim Women’s Network UK. Statistical information from this data is anonymised and analysed to identify trends. These anonymised statistics are shared with relevant stakeholders—such as government departments, public bodies (including the police and CPS), and the media—to advocate for change and raise awareness of key issues.

No identifiable personal data is ever shared unless a victim gives permission to make a report on their behalf. Occasionally, we may share anonymised case studies to illustrate lived experiences and deepen understanding. Muslim Women’s Network UK strictly handles data according to data protection regulations and our safeguarding policies to ensure all information remains secure and confidential.

You can report any incident you believe involves anti-Muslim hatred, hostility, abuse, or discrimination — no matter where it happens. Although not an exhaustive list, this includes:
• Public spaces – such as parks, streets, while driving, or on public transport
• The workplace – including bullying, harassment, or formal grievances
• Accessing services – whether it's a public service (like the police or NHS) or a private one (such as at a hotel, shop, or restaurant)

If it feels wrong or targeted, it’s worth reporting.

It is important your experiences are acknowledged and recorded even if you do not want to escalate and report incidents to the police and even if you do not require further support. An estimated 80% of 'anti-Muslim hate' incidents go unreported, leaving the vast majority of victims unsupported and data uncounted. Muslim Safety Net will record your experience because every report matters. The data can then be leveraged to hold governments and public institutions accountable, urging them to take stronger action against anti-Muslim hatred and discrimination.

Yes. Even if you don’t want to report the incident to the police or take further action, it’s still important to report it to Muslim Safety Net. Your report helps us better understand the scale and nature of anti-Muslim prejudice, discrimination, and hostility — and strengthens our work to challenge it.

You can report any anti-Muslim incident that happens anywhere in the UK, even if you're not a UK citizen. For example, you might be here for work or visiting. We do not record incidents that happen outside the UK, unless there is a UK connection — for instance, if it took place at a British embassy abroad.

You can make a report to Muslim Safety Net via the online phone or by phoning us and leaving a message. Tell us if you are only contacting us to have your experience recorded only or you want advice and support as well.

We record your experience. Based on the nature of the incident and the support you need, we will then offer help or advice appropriately. This may include:
* Assisting with reporting hate crimes to the police
* Advising on issues in services or workplaces
* Where possible, connecting you with pro-bono legal support
